Kemiko Acid Stain Coverage
Calculating Kemiko acid stain coverage is an important part of planning a concrete staining project. Ordering too little stain can interrupt the application, while ordering an excessive amount unnecessarily increases the cost.
Coverage estimates are useful starting points, but the actual amount required depends on the concrete and the application process.
What Determines Acid Stain Coverage?
Concrete porosity is one of the largest factors. Open, porous concrete may accept more liquid than dense, mechanically finished concrete.
The condition of the surface also matters. Rough concrete generally requires more material than smooth concrete because it has greater surface area. Overspray, application equipment and the number of coats will also affect the total amount used.
Coverage may vary because of:
Concrete porosity and surface texture
The age and condition of the slab
The application method
The number of stain coats
The amount of dilution
Overspray and material left in equipment
Vertical surfaces, edges and detailed areas
Do not base an order solely on the room’s advertised dimensions.
Measure the Concrete Surface
Measure the length and width of each concrete section and multiply those numbers to determine its square footage.
For example, a 20-foot by 25-foot floor contains 500 square feet.
Measure adjoining rooms, closets, hallways and other areas separately, and then add them together. For irregularly shaped spaces, divide the floor into smaller rectangles and calculate each area individually.
Only include concrete that will actually be stained.
Account for Multiple Applications
Kemiko’s application system calls for two coats of Stone Tone Concrete Acid Stain. Because the floor receives more than one application, calculate the project according to the complete application system rather than a single pass.
The second coat may not consume exactly the same amount as the first, but it must still be included in the material estimate.
Additional colors used for borders, accents or layering should be calculated separately.
Why You Should Order Extra Material
A small material allowance helps account for differences in concrete absorption, overspray and irregular areas. It also reduces the risk of stopping in the middle of an application.
Stopping partway through a floor can create visible transition lines. The stain should be available before the project begins so each planned application can be completed without interruption.
Buying extra material is particularly important when staining:
Large uninterrupted floors
Textured or rough surfaces
Walls or vertical concrete
Floors receiving several colors
Concrete with an uncertain application history
Does Diluting Kemiko Stain Increase Coverage?
Dilution increases the volume of the mixed solution, but it also changes the color intensity and reaction. Stain should not be diluted simply to stretch the product across a larger floor.
Select the dilution ratio based on the tested appearance. Once a satisfactory ratio has been established, calculate the material needed to reproduce that mixture across the complete project.
Record all measurements and ratios before application.
Include the Complete Kemiko System
Stain is only one part of the project. Planning should also include concrete cleaner, neutralizer, sealer, application equipment and any maintenance finish required for the selected system.
The stained floor must be neutralized and thoroughly cleaned before it is sealed. The amount of sealer required will depend on the product, floor condition and recommended number of applications.
Test Before Calculating the Final Order
A test area can reveal how quickly the concrete absorbs the stain and whether the planned dilution produces the desired color.
For larger projects, complete a representative test section and track the amount used. This provides a more reliable estimate than using square footage alone.
