How to Apply Kemiko Acid Stain

Applying Kemiko acid stain can transform plain concrete into a permanent decorative surface with natural color variation, movement, and depth. Kemiko Stone Tone Concrete Stain reacts chemically with minerals in the concrete rather than covering the floor with an opaque coating.

The finished appearance depends heavily on the condition and composition of the concrete. Proper cleaning, testing, application, neutralization, and sealing are essential. Acid stain is not a product that should be applied over dirty, sealed, painted, or poorly prepared concrete.

Before Applying Kemiko Acid Stain

Kemiko Stone Tone Concrete Stain is intended for properly prepared concrete and other cementitious surfaces containing enough cement or lime to produce a chemical color reaction. Because the stain reacts with the slab itself, different concrete surfaces can produce noticeably different colors and patterns.

The concrete must be cured, dry, porous, and free from existing coatings. Kemiko acid stain should not be applied directly over paint, sealer, wax, adhesive, curing compounds, grease, oil, dirt, or other contaminants.

Acid staining does not hide the condition of the floor. Cracks, patches, discoloration, trowel marks, aggregate exposure, and previous repairs may remain visible after staining. In many projects, these variations become part of the decorative appearance. Heavily repaired or inconsistent concrete may require a cementitious overlay if a more uniform result is needed.

Gather the Necessary Materials

Before starting, make sure the entire staining system is available. Stopping midway because a cleaner, neutralizer, vacuum, or sealer is missing can create application problems.

A typical project requires Kemiko Stone Tone Concrete Stain, Kemiko Neutra Clean Neutralizer and Degreaser, clean water, an acid-resistant pump-up sprayer with a cone tip, stiff-bristle brushes, plastic sheeting, chemical-resistant tape, protective gloves, protective eyewear, suitable respiratory protection, clean footwear, buckets, a wet vacuum or squeegee, and the selected Kemiko sealer.

Use tools and containers that will not react with acid. Metal sprayer components can corrode or contaminate the stain. Protect walls, doors, cabinets, landscaping, adjoining floors, and every other surface that should not be stained.

Step 1: Inspect the Concrete

Begin by examining the entire slab.

Look for paint, glue, sealer, curing compounds, wax, grease, oil, drywall residue, overspray, efflorescence, moisture problems, patches, cracks, and areas that differ noticeably in texture.

Previously covered floors often contain adhesive, paint, construction markings, or contaminants that are difficult to see until the surface is cleaned. These materials can prevent the acid stain from penetrating and create light spots or areas with little color reaction.

Kemiko Stone Tone Stain is not intended for application over an existing coating. The coating must be removed before staining.

Older painted surfaces require special caution. Sanding, grinding, or scraping old paint can release hazardous lead dust. The Kemiko bulletin warns that proper respiratory protection, HEPA vacuuming, and wet cleanup may be required when old paint is disturbed.

Step 2: Prepare the Concrete Surface

Surface preparation has more effect on the finished result than almost any other part of the process.

Remove every substance that could block penetration or interfere with the chemical reaction. Clean the slab thoroughly and mechanically remove incompatible coatings when necessary.

Kemiko’s application bulletin states that properly prepared concrete should have a slight texture and identifies grinding or shot blasting to a Concrete Surface Profile of approximately CSP 3 as preparation methods. The bulletin specifically says not to use acid etching to prepare the concrete before applying Stone Tone Stain. Acid etching can interfere with the minerals needed for the stain reaction.

Mechanical preparation must also be handled carefully. Excessive grinding can expose aggregate, remove the cement-rich surface paste, or produce visible grinding marks. Those changes can affect stain color and absorption.

After preparing the surface, remove all dust and debris. Vacuum thoroughly rather than relying only on sweeping.

Step 3: Test the Concrete with Water

Perform a water absorption test after cleaning and preparation.

Place clean water on several areas of the slab, especially where oil, adhesive, paint, or sealer may have been present.

When water darkens the concrete and absorbs without beading, the surface is generally porous enough to accept the stain. When water beads or remains on top, additional preparation is needed.

Test more than one area. A floor may be porous in the center but still contain sealer, grease, or adhesive around the edges.

Allow the floor to dry completely after the water test.

Step 4: Make a Color Sample

Never rely entirely on a printed color card, computer screen, photograph, or previous project.

Kemiko acid stain reacts differently with different concrete mixes, mineral contents, finishing methods, ages, and surface conditions. A sample on the actual slab is the only practical way to preview the reaction.

Choose an inconspicuous area such as a closet, space beneath an appliance, cabinet location, or covered edge. Apply the same dilution, number of coats, neutralization process, and sealer that will be used on the main floor.

The unsealed stain may look dull or chalky. Evaluate the sample after neutralization and, when practical, after applying the planned sealer. Wetting the stain can provide an approximate preview of how the color may deepen when sealed, but it is not a substitute for a completed sample.

Testing is especially important with reactive stains because unexpected minerals in the concrete can alter the final tone. Kemiko advises testing a small area before treating the entire surface.

Step 5: Protect the Surrounding Area

Mask and cover every surface that should not receive stain.

Acid stain overspray can permanently discolor walls, trim, masonry, metal, landscaping, finished flooring, cabinets, and nearby concrete. Protect doorways and ventilation pathways so mist cannot travel into adjoining rooms.

Use chemical-resistant plastic and tape. Ordinary masking materials may loosen when exposed to moisture or acid.

When staining outdoors, protect plants and soil from stain and rinse water. Neutralization water may contain acid residue and colorant capable of staining adjoining surfaces.

Step 6: Check the Weather and Working Conditions

Kemiko specifies application temperatures between 50°F and 85°F, or 10°C and 29°C. The surface should also be at least 5°F, or 3°C, above the dew point. Do not apply the stain in direct sunlight or during rainy or foggy conditions.

Hot concrete can cause the stain to dry too quickly and may create uneven color. During warm weather, Kemiko recommends applying the stain early in the morning while the concrete is cooler.

Interior areas must have adequate ventilation. Control access so children, pets, customers, workers, and other occupants cannot enter the area during application.

Step 7: Prepare the Kemiko Acid Stain

Shake the container well before use. When visible settling is present, Kemiko instructs applicators to strain the material before application.

Confirm the recommended dilution for the selected color and project before mixing. Kemiko’s FAQ states that at a common 1:1 water-to-stain dilution, one gallon of stain covers approximately 400 square feet with two applications, or approximately 800 square feet with one application. Actual coverage varies with porosity, texture, waste, technique, and the condition of the concrete. Kemiko recommends two applications for the best stain color.

Do not assume that every color, slab, or project should use the same dilution. Follow the current label and technical instructions for the product being applied.

Step 8: Apply the First Coat

Kemiko identifies a low-pressure conventional pump-up sprayer with a cone tip or an airless sprayer as suitable application equipment.

Begin at the point farthest from the exit and work toward a location where you can leave without stepping through freshly stained concrete.

Apply the stain evenly without creating rigid spray lines. Keep the sprayer moving and overlap the spray pattern so the surface remains wet enough for the chemical reaction to develop naturally.

Do not allow the product to puddle. Puddling can create excessively dark areas, residue buildup, uneven reactions, and difficulty during neutralization.

Maintain a wet edge, but do not attempt to force the concrete into looking perfectly uniform. Reactive acid stain is supposed to produce natural variation. Overworking the surface can create brush marks or unnatural patterns.

Some installers use an acid-resistant brush to work the stain into the concrete immediately after spraying. The correct technique depends on the desired appearance and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 9: Allow the First Coat to Dry

Allow the stain to dry completely before evaluating or applying another coat.

Drying time depends on the temperature, humidity, airflow, slab temperature, application thickness, and concrete porosity. Kemiko’s application bulletin allows up to 24 hours after the surface becomes dry to the touch between coats.

Do not judge the final color while powdery reaction residue remains on the surface. The floor may appear dull, muddy, or darker than expected before it is neutralized and cleaned.

Once the first application is dry, lightly wet several small areas with a cloth to preview the depth of color. Kemiko states that an additional application may be made when the color is not deep enough.

Step 10: Apply the Second Coat

Apply the second coat using the same controlled technique.

A second application can deepen the color, improve coverage, and add visual movement. Kemiko’s consumer instructions recommend applying two coats of concrete acid stain color.

The second application does not necessarily need to duplicate the first spray direction exactly. Changing the direction or pattern can reduce visible application lines and create a more natural effect.

Do not continue adding stain indefinitely. The concrete can react only with the minerals available near the surface. Once the reaction potential has been used, additional stain may primarily leave residue rather than create more color.

Allow the final coat to dry completely.

Step 11: Neutralize the Acid Stain

Neutralization stops the acid reaction and prepares the surface for sealing.

Kemiko recommends Neutra Clean Neutralizer and Degreaser for this part of the process. Its current FAQ gives a neutralization dilution of approximately eight to ten parts water to one part Neutra Clean, subject to the directions on the product container.

Apply the diluted neutralizer to the stained concrete and scrub the surface thoroughly with a stiff-bristle brush. Work the solution into the entire floor, including edges and corners.

Neutralization does more than stop the acid. It also loosens powdery reaction residue and removes colorant that did not absorb into the concrete.

This step cannot be skipped. Kemiko warns that sealer may fail to bond when acid residue and powder remain on the floor.

Do not use vinegar as a neutralizer. Vinegar is acidic and will not neutralize another acid effectively. Kemiko specifically warns against using vinegar to neutralize Stone Tone Concrete Acid Stain.

Step 12: Rinse and Remove All Residue

After scrubbing with the neutralizing solution, remove the dirty liquid using a wet vacuum or squeegee.

Rinse with clean water, scrub again, and remove the rinse water. Repeat until the floor is clean and no loose reaction residue remains.

Do not merely allow the dirty water to evaporate. That leaves acid residue, salts, and loose pigment on the surface.

A common field test is to wipe the dry floor with a clean white cloth. Continued transfer of heavy powder or color indicates that more cleaning is needed. The surface must be clean enough for the selected sealer to bond directly to the concrete.

Dispose of wastewater according to applicable rules. Prevent it from entering landscaping, storm drains, finished areas, or surfaces that could be stained.

Step 13: Allow the Concrete to Dry

The concrete must be thoroughly dry before sealing.

Moisture trapped beneath a sealer can cause whitening, cloudiness, bubbling, weak adhesion, or premature coating failure. Drying time varies with humidity, airflow, slab temperature, porosity, and the selected sealer.

Do not choose a waiting period by guesswork. Follow the requirements for the exact Kemiko sealer or topcoat being used.

Keep the clean floor protected while it dries. Foot traffic, dust, insects, pet hair, grease, and construction debris can become trapped beneath the finish.

Step 14: Apply a Compatible Kemiko Sealer

Kemiko Stone Tone Concrete Stain requires a compatible topcoat. The stain creates the color, but it does not provide the complete protective wearing surface.

Choose the sealer according to the location, expected traffic, moisture exposure, chemical exposure, slip requirements, appearance, and maintenance plan.

Kemiko Stone Tone Sealer II is one option for residential interior floors and other compatible applications. Kemiko states that commercial or industrial floors exposed to heavier traffic or harsher conditions may require a more durable epoxy or polyurethane system installed by an experienced professional.

Follow the application bulletin for the exact sealer. Sealer instructions vary considerably. A technique that works for a water-based acrylic may be wrong for an epoxy, polyurethane, polyaspartic, or penetrating finish.

Apply thin, even coats and avoid puddling. Observe all recoat, curing, ventilation, temperature, and respiratory-protection requirements.

Step 15: Protect and Maintain the Finished Floor

Do not place furniture, rugs, vehicles, equipment, or heavy objects on the floor until the sealer has fully cured according to its technical instructions.

Light foot-traffic time and full chemical-cure time are not the same thing. A floor that feels dry may still be vulnerable to scratches, tire marks, moisture, or impressions.

Use floor protection under furniture legs. Avoid adhesive tape directly on the finish. Do not cover a newly sealed floor with plastic or nonbreathable materials unless the sealer manufacturer specifically permits it.

Clean the floor with products compatible with the selected sealer. Some interior acrylic systems may benefit from a sacrificial maintenance wax, while other coatings should not be waxed. Follow the maintenance requirements for the complete system rather than treating every stained floor alike.

Common Kemiko Acid Stain Mistakes

Applying Stain Over Sealer or Paint

This is a bad idea. Acid stain cannot react properly through an existing coating. Remove the coating and confirm water absorption before staining.

Acid-Etching the Concrete First

Do not acid-etch a floor that will receive Kemiko acid stain. Kemiko explicitly prohibits acid etching as surface preparation for Stone Tone Stain because it can interfere with the necessary reaction.

Skipping the Test Area

Concrete chemistry is unpredictable. A color card cannot tell you exactly how a specific slab will react.

Expecting a Uniform Color

Kemiko acid stain creates mottled, variegated color. Someone seeking a flat, perfectly consistent color may be better served by a dye, pigmented coating, or overlay system.

Allowing the Stain to Puddle

Puddles can produce dark spots, excessive residue, or uneven reactions. Apply controlled coats without flooding the floor.

Sealing Over Residue

This is one of the most damaging mistakes. Sealer applied over reaction powder may initially appear bonded and then peel or lift later.

Using Vinegar to Neutralize the Stain
